On the mainland across from Isla Loma Partida, the blue phase of this species had a large section of its territory cut down. Nothing could be found along the hillside but the dry remains of the forest. Under the hot tropical sun, the trunks and limbs of the fallen giants looked like bleached bones. The ground was hard and dry and barren of any visible life except for an occasional buzzing insect. What once supported a multitude of species was being turned into a monocultural field devised to support but a single species.

More than twenty different morphs of the strawberry poison frog have been found, more will probably be discovered, and some will probably perish without our ever knowing they existed. Each time we cut down a section of tropical rain forest, we trim a little more off the evolutionary tree.
